OpenAI has introduced a new "Data agent" for ChatGPT Work. While the initial announcement is brief and technical details remain limited so far, the core capability is straightforward: the agent allows users to connect their company data, uncover insights, and build interactive dashboards using natural language.
Rather than writing database queries or manually configuring pivot tables, users can prompt the AI to analyze their connected data sets and visualize the results.
What this means for SMB operations
For small and mid-sized businesses, making sense of operational data is often a bottleneck. Most SMBs generate plenty of data across their sales, inventory, and customer support systems. However, turning that raw information into a usable dashboard typically requires expensive Business Intelligence (BI) software and the specialized talent to set it up.
If ChatGPT Work's Data agent functions as described, it significantly lowers the barrier to entry for basic business intelligence. Operations managers, financial controllers, or business owners could ask direct questions about their data—such as "Show me the trend in customer support ticket resolution times over the last quarter"—and receive a dashboard in return, bypassing the need for a data analyst to act as a middleman.
At Install Agent, our team builds automations that pull data out of siloed software and route it where it needs to go. That is only half the battle; the other half is understanding what that data means. Tools that natively bridge the gap between raw data and visual insights using plain English make it easier for smaller teams to operate with the same analytical rigor as larger enterprises.
Because the release notes are currently sparse, we do not yet know the exact limitations on dataset sizes, supported data connections, or the complexity of the dashboards it can generate. We will be watching closely as more details emerge to see how reliably this agent can handle the messy, real-world data of a growing business.
